I was recently contacted by a friend living just outside the Devon town of Newton Abbot who knew that I worked on websites and asked me if I could recommend a "local accountant".

To start with I was a little confused, not being quite sure why my friend wanted a firm of accountants in North Wales when he lived the best part of 300 miles away (it's almost a 6 hour drive from there to here).  The confusion was cleared up though when he went on to say that he had found accountants in Exeter and Torquay but none in his home town.

I told him that I didn't know of any personally and asked him if there was anything in particular that he was looking for, for example general tax advice, bookkeeping or something more specialised.

Having found out that, as a small tradesman, he was looking for advice about something called the Construction Industry Scheme (or CIS for short) which apparently is something that is used in the construction industry to make sure that the right amount of tax is paid by contractors and sub-contractors.

A quick search for accountants in Newton Abbot brought up nearly 60,000 results and I pointing him in the direction of the Google search - oddly enough I'd actually heard of two or three of the firms listed (Peplows, Tax Assist and Rupp Fraser) but had no idea if they dealt with CIS.  Although they were not on the first page of the results it turned out that there was a local firm called My Tax & Accounts who offer CIS services and advice to clients.

My friend contacted them and reported back to me that Joanne who is the accountant there seemed to know what she was talking about, and that there was an added advantage that they were based north of the A38 between Bovey Tracey and Chudleigh Knighton and was only a few minutes from his home so he was going to arrange a meeting.

At the moment I've not heard back about how the meeting went but when I do I'll update this post.
